Chrome Restart Command

Sometimes the Chrome browser needs a good old 'kick in the pants' to get back on track and perform properly. That 'kick in the pants' is done by typing chrome://restart in the url line, and then pressing the Enter key. The browser will close, do some housekeeping, then reopen to the default view that you would see when first starting up the Chromebook.

Rather than doing that every time you want to restart the browser, you can set that command as a bookmark and execute it with a single tap on the touchpad (or a single click of the mouse). Perform these steps.

  1. At the top of the browser window, click on the '+' sign to the right of the open tabs.

  2. With the new tab displayed, click on the white star at the right end of the url line.

  3. In the Bookmark added window, click on Done.

  4. Find the New Tab bookmark in the Bookmarks bar, right-click on it and select Edit.

  5. In the Edit window, make these changes:
    • For the Name, enter chrome://restart
    • Change the URL to chrome://restart
    • Click on Save.

  6. For convenience, click and drag the bookmark to the left end of the Bookmarks bar so it will be easy to find in the future.

  7. Try it now: Left-click on the chrome://restart bookmark and see what happens.
