Presidential Dollar Series: 2007-ongoing

Legislation was passed by Congress in 2005 which authorized the U.S. Mint to produce a series of dollar coins to feature the likeness of each President of the United States of America.  The series will feature 4 coins each year, issued about every 13 weeks (similarly to the 50-States Quarter Dollar program which issued five coins per year).  The order of issuing of the coins will be in the same order as the Presidents served in office.  Interestingly, Grover Cleveland had two non-consecutive terms as the 22nd and 24th president, so he was honored with two coins, both in the year 2012.

The Presidential Dollar Coins have been produced in addition to the Sacagawea one-dollar coin, and they have the same metal composition, color, size, and weight as the Sacagawea one-dollar coin.

This is the US Mint website for the Presidential Dollar coin series.

Obverse Edge Reverse
The front side (obverse) will have the likeness of the president.  The first coin in the series honors President George Washington.

The $1 Presidential coins feature edge-incused inscriptions of "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date of issue.

This marks the first time since the St. Gaudens Double Eagle (1907-1933) that the United States has issued a coin with edge lettering for circulation.

The reverse side will have the same design on every coin.  It features the Statue of Liberty, the inscription "$1", and the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA".

Issuing of the coins started on Feb 14, 2007 which was Presidents' Day.  The series will continue until all eligible former presidents are honored.  There is a requirement that the honoree must be deceased for two years before he can be honored on one of these coins, so in 2016 the series skipped Jimmy Carter, making Ronald Reagan the last President of the coin series in 2016.

2018 update:There have been no deaths of former presidents since 2006, so no additional coins have been made since Renaldus Magnus. Given the 2-year waiting period after a president's death, no new coins will made until 2020 or perhaps later.
